Those Darn Tech-Savvy Kids

Generation Y (the current twenty-somethings) is really irritating. Here they are, with all of this modern technology know-how, and they refuse to share it with their Baby Boomer coworkers. As this article exposes, those kids don't bother explaining to their elders how they fix computer problems...they just fix them. The Millennials need to pay back the Baby Boomers for all those years of higher education. Young adults need to take some of the hours a day they spend texting the person sitting next to them and methodically explain technology. After all, don't those young hotshots understand that they need to hold their elders' hands through their technological woes? They need to understand that older adults cannot figure things out independently. How dare younger people overestimate the intellectual and technological capacity of their seniors? Come on, Generation Y. Show some respect.

  1. I think it would be intriguing to consider the baby boomers' inherent resistance to anything technologically related in the 21st century. They’re always complaining about this new techno-age ushered in by Generation Y and voice their frustration over their inability to fully comprehend technology. But a good question to ask would be do they truly want to learn the informal language of text messaging, the endless acronyms in instant messaging dictionary, or how to navigate the highways of the internet? This is an inconvenience in comparison to their mastery of the old school pen and paper methodology they may not be willing to undergo.

  2. The first time my mother sent me a text message it read: "shanebhomebycurfew.iluvu." Apparently, she didn't no the "spc" symbol on her Blackberry meant space.

Through my experiences, it seems as though the distinct difference between the young and the old the willingness to attempt trial and error methodology. Weather your 3, 13, or 23, the drive is to play and figure things out as you go. When was the last time you read the manuel for something? For the older generations, however, this was not the case. The learned as children and through their adult hood by being taught. Consequently, the problem arises in that Generation Y and the Millennials assume that their elders can figure things out on their own.

In my moms case, after days of mocking, she excavated her drawers and found the ever-helpful manuel to her Blackberry.
